.   .   .

i have been thinking about the utility of regions in games. they act as buckets for themes and challenges and vibes and can be a powerful tool for organization and presentation.

there is a game i have been running for nearly a year now and regions have become one of my primary tools there. they have served as a useful method for compartmentalization so that i do not have to hold the whole world in my head, but the regions i use are focused on place. i use other tools for peoples and things.

i have been thinking about the utility of regions in games. about the weight of them and what they yield.

regions can require tremendous exertion. anywhere you have lots of information there is always a risk that you will need to dig for it, exchanging time and energy for clarity and, perhaps, bleeding away the vibes.

i have been thinking about the utility of regions in games. they are, generally, primarily, spatial things

i think i have devised a method for bringing people to the forefront

 . . .

(and perhaps things too, though they are not mentioned further here)

. . .

a way of organizing place using a social-spatial plane.

*

.   .   .

*   allow me to introduce you to the triangle region   *

it begins with a triangle, made of three points and three sides, and three arrows which give it momentum and outline infinity. this is the process of forms, and it is an important one.

the triangle is the region in it's entirety for now, though there are further depths yet to plumb.

next you must perform the rite of names. vaguery is preferable now, use specificity like salt

name the place at the heart of the triangle, let it soak into everything

*
*   at each point name a denizen   *
know that their presence is the focus of the region, not the extent of it

at each arrow name the relation, direction is important
implication and inference and brevity should be your goals
. . .
three sister muses

and thus a region is born, a tiny thing bursting with potential but lacking in substance. for now, let the vagueries simmer in your imagination and i will show you how to make a world.

*

the world grows from seeds

*   an infinite forest of connected trees   *

select the point of your region which interests you most, or one that calls to you, or one chosen by fate.

let the chosen point be your start and repeat the process of forms and the rites of naming until you have created a twin. keep them joined and let them speak to one another, their chatter is rich with possibility.

like many things, the processes here are most powerful when performed in threes. let your pieces contribute to a greater whole, and you will be rewarded with efficiency.

this is the triforce connection and the magic of forms. six points yield nine relations and the careful arrangement of three regions has created a fourth. the form matches the constitute parts and can be manipulated and arranged in the same ways as before.

infinity blooms, time and energy are its only limits.

but let us first turn our attention to the details of our creations.

let us polish the world into something beautiful.

*

infinity stretches inwards and outwards,

*   the wise know that they cannot have all of it   *

the processes of forms grants us some certainty. the laws of shape and geometry can be harnessed forever or, in most cases, until you inevitably perish. but to make something shine, we must often leave the certainty of math and process, and delve into something older and less predictable.

the rites of names skirt the fields of artistic expression, where our cauldron bubbles and possibility simmers. it is here that true magic lives, though we haven't always the creative strength to seize it. this is normal, creativity is a muscle that will grow when fed and used, and perhaps, blossom one day into something beautiful and terrible and singular.

for now, let the simmering broth speak to you. let its smells and connections inspire you. let its bubbling words surprise you and let the world held in triangles grow inside your mind.

this is the secret of magic, the form is temporary but its effects can echo and proliferate. let it live within you, let the world live within you and return to the marks and sigils when it needs to be strengthened.

you contain within you

twin serpents of creation and destruction

let wisdom temper both, and they will not devour you whole

there is little else for me to say. all that you require has been recorded, though i am unsure how this place will fare with time. i will leave you with a gift, a scoop from my cauldron to help season your own. create your world, or grow the one i made if you so choose, soon i will be gone from here, and it will make no difference to me.

i wish you luck, o curious spirit, and thank you for letting my words live once more within you, even if they do not live for long. the torch of magic can be a heavy thing to carry, may these humble offerings ease your burden for now.

everything is triangles

skiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiillllllllllllllssssssssssssss

i am going through the old school primer for a  book club at the cauldron ,  it talks about using skills it has me thinking about skills. i thought he had a beard i think skills are, primarily, for the player, they are the handholds on a rockwall, something to give you grip when coming up with solutions. they are player tables, it can just be a list: heres one for  one d six too many and they become a wall, a little dab will do ya, different flavors of action and styles of motion this adds tactility, it becomes something the player did when they ask the gm if their climb skill helps them. its another way to interact with the world, which can do wonders for creativity. equipment is setting is advice i heard a long time ago and have gotten so much use out of i love building equipment tables, they do so much work as far as vibes. and very specific equipment is no different than a skill, you just gotta carry it. skills are players mind equipment, they are gummy and recyclabl...
